It stood quietly beneath the yellow walls, with sparse and slanted branches, as if it had already become a timeless mantra. Admiring its shape, it exudes a sense of solitude and elegance. Reflecting on its spirit, it embodies resilience and purity. Amidst the distant chimes and the lingering incense, the plum tree transcends its nature; it becomes a mirror reflecting one’s inner self and a window leading to the realm of meditation. This account is not merely about a meeting with flowers but also a journey inward, where one seeks a moment of tranquility and awakening between the plum tree, the temple, light and shadow, and stillness and contemplation. May these words also guide you into the Pure Brightness of winter, allowing you to perceive the essence within the fragrance and silence.

The twelfth lunar month is an extremely special period – it marks the transition between winter and spring, the shift from concealment to revelation, and the quiet handover of the old year to the new. The air is bitterly cold, with bare branches reaching towards the sky. The sky is gray and low, and even one’s body seems to be wrapped in a layer of fatigue. The cold seeps into the heart, and the gloom seems to envelop the entire body, compressing the energy fields of heaven, earth, and humanity to their limits. Yet, I have always believed that extremes will reverse. Therefore, I often yearn to seek out the hidden energy within the world and discover some sign of spring – even if it’s just a faint trace.

“A flower represents a world; a tree symbolizes enlightenment.” This ancient phrase embodies profound philosophical insights and wisdom about life. Though small, a flower can reflect the mysteries of the vast universe; a tree, though ordinary, holds the essence of life’s awakening. Plants are inherently natural, pure, and unrestrained, often serving as a medium for people to comprehend Buddhist principles. They illustrate impermanence, embody non-conflict, symbolize purity, and, in their silent presence, guide individuals toward awareness.

Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou is situated at the foot of Lingyin Mountain in the northwest of West Lake, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. It is one of China’s well-known ancient Buddhist monasteries. The temple was first built in the first year of Xianhe of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, and over the course of more than 1,600 years, it has witnessed countless changes. It is also an important site for Chan Buddhism in China. The temple is densely planted with plum blossoms. Every December, as the plum blossoms bloom in quietude, their faint fragrance wafts through the air. People come here to admire the plum blossoms, gain insights from them, and offer prayers. Amid the cold fragrance and sparse shadows, they seek answers to the true nature of nature and life, allowing their minds to settle, be enlightened, and elevate.

On a certain afternoon in the twelfth lunar month, I walked into Lingyin Temple, a thousand-year-old ancient monastery. It resembled a warm and gentle pearl, quietly nestled among the verdant hills of Hangzhou. The Buddha’s light was faintly visible, and the fragrance of sandalwood was distant. The ancient structures, exquisite sculptures, and profound halls seemed to whisper through time, transmuting centuries of hardships into a tranquil sense of Zen. Fragments of incense smoke rose gently, carrying people’s wishes and blessings towards the boundless sky and into the distant future.

Every brick, every tile, every blade of grass, and every tree in Lingyin Temple seem to be imbued with the tranquil essence of Buddhism. As one walks through the temple, every corner exudes an indescribable sense of peace and harmony. Suddenly, a faint fragrance wafts gently by – the scent is crisp and cold, almost imperceptible yet stubbornly lingering in the air, akin to an elusive trace of Zen. Following this fragrance, I traversed the silent corridors, passed by the silent halls of scriptures, until I arrived in the courtyard behind the Buddhist scriptures hall, where I finally encountered the ancient plum tree.

The gnarled branches are covered with a thin layer of snow, but this cannot conceal the strong and robust structure beneath. The branches are already adorned with small buds resembling wax resins. Some of them have quietly burst open, revealing the pale yellow center of the bud. The petals are thin as refined wax and tremble slightly in the cold wind, yet they stubbornly cling to the branches. The older leaves have withered away, but a few scattered ones remain close by, acting as final guardians or silent complements. Sunlight filters through the temple’s eaves, casting sparse shadows. The yellow hue of the plum blossoms gradually softens within these shadows, becoming warm and gentle like a silent Buddhist lamp.

The posture of the plum blossom is elegant and composed. Its branches either lean against the wall or stand quietly in the courtyard; the flowers either remain closed like thoughts or burst open like words, each state possessing its own natural rhythm. Occasionally, a cold wind passes through the courtyard, causing the flower branches to gently sway, and a faint fragrance to waft, as if reciting silent scriptures. When it is still, it resembles a contemplative monk, steadfast like a devout pilgrim; when it moves, it appears like a graceful fairy, adding a touch of liveliness and vitality to the ancient temple with its serene demeanor.

The fragrance of the plum blossom is subtle and delicate, not overpowering but long-lasting enough to penetrate the biting cold of winter and quietly seep into the heart. This scent intertwines with the faint sandalwood fragrance and the lingering incense smoke within the temple, creating a unique sense of Zen that induces one to calm their mind and find peace. I stood beneath the plum tree, allowing this subtle fragrance to permeate my very being. In the distance, ancient bells tolled softly, while chanting sounds wafted like smoke. The plum blossoms quietly bloomed amidst this symphony, as if transforming the entire winter’s chill into a soothing sense of Zen.

The plum blossoms within the temple stand as a distinct and tranquil landscape, characterized by their delicate color, subtle fragrance, ancient appearance, and graceful demeanor. It is not merely a natural adornment but also a symbol of spirituality, deeply intertwined with the religious atmosphere of the temple and the cultural heritage accumulated over millennia. The presence of the plum blossoms adds a sense of clear tranquility and profound Zen to this sacred place, allowing those who pause before them to experience a beauty that transcends the mundane and a wisdom of quiet contemplation.

The plum blossom blooms magnificently in the bitter cold winter, unafraid of the wind and snow, exuding a strong and dignified aura. In life’s journey of adversity, there are often storms and frost that obstruct one’s path. One should learn from the plum blossom’s demeanor: to take root in the harsh cold, to bloom in the desolation, and to maintain the unquenchable flame within. In this bustling and chaotic world, one should also cultivate the solitary nature of the plum blossom – without needing to conform to the cacophony of the times, or bow to the judgments of the masses. Instead, one should quietly guard one’s purity and convictions, allowing life to flourish serenely and openly in its own season.

The plum blossom chooses to bloom quietly during the harsh winter when all else is dormant. It never makes a fuss; instead, it pours out its beauty in silence. This demeanor serves as a reminder: true value often lies in humble efforts and sustained dedication. Its beauty is subtle and restrained; its fragrance is refreshing and far-reaching, never overpowering. It seems to be a gentle admonition: when one has achieved something, one should emulate the plum blossom by embracing one’s virtues without drawing attention to oneself and remaining calm and clear-headed in the face of praise.

The plum blossom quietly blooms in the biting cold of winter, conveying warmth and hope to the world. It teaches us that true optimism does not mean ignoring the storms; rather, it means understanding that winter is long, yet still opening oneself up. It never waits for the favor of the spring breeze; instead, it grows and blooms quietly within its own season. This clear and independent nature is akin to a form of life’s self-awareness – we too should cultivate our inner strength rather than relying on external warmth, and live with confidence and poise within our own designated time.

The spirit of the plum blossom embodies qualities of resilience, purity, silent dedication, optimism in the face of adversity, independence, humility, and unwavering commitment. It stands quietly amidst the passage of time, much like a silent mentor, offering us a clear reflection of our inner selves. Drawing upon the fragrance and strength that come from the depths of winter can help us grow and flourish in challenging circumstances, illuminating the faint light of meaning in ordinary situations. It can also serve as a guardian of clarity and steadfastness in a world filled with turmoil and noise.

The yellow walls of the Great Buddha Hall stand solemnly and majestically, exuding an extraordinary sense of solemnity. The sunlight cascades down, casting a warm golden glow over the walls, as if the boundless wisdom and compassion of Buddhism are quietly flowing through the world. The tall yellow walls contrast beautifully with the flying eaves at the top of the hall, adding to its grandeur and depth. The incense smoke rises gently from the censers at the foot of the walls. Devotees bow their heads and clasp their hands in reverence. This wall seems to serve as a tender boundary between the earthly realm and the Pure Land. Standing before it, one feels an overwhelming sense of sanctity, causing one to breathe deeply and feel a sense of awe.

Close your hands, bring your palms together, and gently press your fingertips to your heart’s center. As you close your hands, all worldly attachments gradually fade away, allowing you to turn inward and return to your innate heart – a place where there is inherent purity and enlightenment. Cherishing blessings is not just a way of living; it is also a profound form of wisdom. This creates a serene and clear atmosphere of meditation. When the wind blows, the shadows come to life – as if thousands of delicate ink-colored butterflies are quietly fluttering on a dull yellow background.
