<p class="ql-block">"Restoring the Truth of History" - Senior Academician Mr. Zeng Chengkui's Doctoral Degree Inquiry Documentary</p> <p class="ql-block">作者：波鳴-耕海村夫</p><p class="ql-block">美篇號：13888460</p><p class="ql-block">Author: Hanami - Koumi Murafu</p><p class="ql-block">Beautiful edition: 13888460</p> <p class="ql-block">序言</p><p class="ql-block"> 2019年6月18日，適逢中國著名海洋生物學家、藻類學家，中國科學院海洋研究所名譽所長，已故中國科學院資深院士曾呈奎先生（1909-2005）誕辰110周年。曾先生畢生致力于海洋科學研究，尤其在藻類學與海藻化學領(lǐng)域成就斐然，享譽世界。國際學術(shù)界高度評價：“曾呈奎是二戰(zhàn)前在美國受訓(xùn)的中國海洋植物學家，他開創(chuàng)了海水養(yǎng)殖，將中國培育為世界最大的海藻生產(chǎn)國。”</p><p class="ql-block"> 然而，自2017年起，國內(nèi)有媒體（如XX觀察網(wǎng)）刊文稱，有人對曾呈奎院士1942年所獲“美國密歇根大學博士學位”提出質(zhì)疑，甚至指其“涉嫌造假”（見附件《重磅！曾呈奎院士博士學位涉嫌造假》節(jié)錄）。</p><p class="ql-block"> 為澄清事實，以正視聽，中國科學院責成海洋研究所在曾呈奎先生誕辰110周年紀念活動之前，徹查真相，還原歷史。</p><p class="ql-block"> 海洋所黨委與所領(lǐng)導(dǎo)高度重視，決定由黨委副書記兼紀委書記畢偉同志具體負責，紀委副書記朱繼春同志協(xié)助執(zhí)行，并力爭于6月18日紀念大會前完成調(diào)查任務(wù)。本人雖為研究所退休人員，但因曾與曾老及其海內(nèi)外親屬在公務(wù)中有較多接觸，故受邀參與此次查詢工作。</p><p class="ql-block"> 本文即為我參與查詢曾呈奎先生美國密歇根大學博士學位證書及學籍檔案之紀實，亦以此告慰海洋科學界一代宗師曾呈奎先生的在天之靈。</p> <p class="ql-block">Foreword</p><p class="ql-block">June 18, 2019 coincides with the 110th anniversary of the birth of Mr. Zeng Chengkui (1909-2005), a famous Chinese marine biologist, algaeologist, honorary director of the Institute of Oceanography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the late senior academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Mr. Zeng has devoted his whole life to marine scientific research, especially in the fields of algaeology and seaweed chemistry, and has made great achievements in the world. The international academic community highly praised: "Zeng Chengkui was a Chinese marine botanist trained in the United States before World War II. He pioneered seawater aquaculture and cultivated China into the world's largest seaweed producer."</p><p class="ql-block">However, since 2017, some domestic media (such as XX Observation Network) have published an article saying that some people have questioned the "Doctoral Degree from the University of Michigan in the United States" obtained by Academician Zeng Chengkui in 1942, and even said that he was "suspected of forgery" (see the attachment "Blockbuke! Excerpt from Zeng Chengkui's doctorate degree is suspected of forgery).</p><p class="ql-block">In order to clarify the facts and correct the vision, the Chinese Academy of Sciences instructed the Institute of Oceanography to thoroughly investigate the truth and restore history before the 110th anniversary of Mr. Zeng Chengkui's birth.</p><p class="ql-block">The Party Committee and the leaders of the Institute of Oceanography attach great importance to it, and decided that Comrade Bi Wei, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Secretary of the Commission for Discipline Inspection, will be specifically responsible, Comrade Zhu Jichun, Deputy Secretary of the Commission for Discipline Inspection, will assist in the implementation, and strive to complete the investigation task before the commemorative conference on June 18. Although I am a retired employee of the research institute, I have been invited to participate in this inquiry because I have had more contact with Zeng Lao and his relatives at home and abroad on official business.</p><p class="ql-block">This article is a documentary for me to participate in the inquiry of Mr. Zeng Chengkui's doctoral degree certificate and student registration file of the University of Michigan in the United States, and also comforts Mr. Zeng Chengkui, a generation of marine science, for his spirit in heaven.</p> <p class="ql-block"> ?。ㄒ唬┚o急受命：搜尋歷史憑證</p><p class="ql-block"> 2019年6月10日，我于結(jié)束威海行程返青途中，接到所紀委副書記朱繼春同志的緊急電話。朱書記開門見山：“所里急需找到曾老1942年在密歇根大學（Michigan，舊譯密執(zhí)安）的博士學位證書原件或官方存檔證明。檔案室李瑞芳同志多方查找，目前僅找到證書照片復(fù)制件。您是否了解相關(guān)線索？”</p><p class="ql-block"> 我迅速回復(fù)，憶起近期退休同事中對此有過討論，并提曾老秘書周顯銅老師（已故）和文獻中心的吳鈞老師，他們共同整理過曾呈奎院士辦公室或曾接觸過相關(guān)材料。我首先建議查詢位于海洋所生物樓一層、與“童第周紀念展室”斜對面的“曾呈奎紀念展室”。此建議源于2007年，曾老夫人張宜范女士赴美與女兒團聚前，曾將其珍藏的部分遺物移交給該展室，證書原件或在其列。當年我本人曾與周秘書共同接收過這批物品并制作清單。不過，原件也可能被曾老夫人帶走，或在后續(xù)整理中遺失。</p><p class="ql-block"> 朱繼春隨即點明查詢的緊迫性：中國科學院要求在6月18日紀念大會前得出定論。他提出，若親屬處無法提供，能否直接向密歇根大學查詢原始檔案？</p><p class="ql-block"> 而曾老親屬情況是：長子曾云鵬在加拿大；長女靳曾珍麗在臺已故；次子曾云驥、養(yǎng)女王紹麟在美國。</p><p class="ql-block"> 經(jīng)溝通分析，確定最可行的方案是：委托曾云驥博士（曾老次子，美國海洋與大氣局前高級研究員，物理海洋學家，密歇根大學校友）及曾藍萍博士（曾云驥堂妹，加州大學圣地亞哥分校退休教授）代表親屬，向密歇根大學正式發(fā)起檔案查詢申請。</p><p class="ql-block"> 為確保高效，我們制定了“雙管齊下”方案：</p><p class="ql-block"> 1. 由曾云驥、曾藍萍以親屬身份正式向密大查詢。</p><p class="ql-block"> 2. 如校方要求，海洋所將第一時間出具正式《查詢委托書》予以支持。</p> <p class="ql-block">(I) Urgent order: search for historical credentials</p><p class="ql-block">On June 10, 2019, I received an urgent call from Comrade Zhu Jichun, Deputy Secretary of the Commission for Discipline Inspection, on my way back to Qinghai after my trip to Weihai. Secretary Zhu went straight to the point: "The institute urgently needs to find the original or official archival certificate of Zeng Lao's doctoral degree certificate at the University of Michigan in 1942. Comrade Li Ruifang in the archive room searched for many people. At present, only copies of the certificate photos have been found. Do you know the relevant clues?"</p><p class="ql-block">I replied quickly, recalling that there had been a discussion among colleagues who had recently retired, and mentioned Mr. Zhou Xiantong (deceased), the secretary of Zeng, and Mr. Wu Jun of the Literature Center, who had sorted out the office of Academician Zeng Chengkui together or had come into contact with relevant materials. First of all, I suggest checking the "Zeng Chengkui Memorial Exhibition Room" located on the first floor of the Biological Building of the Ocean Institute, diagonally opposite the "Tong's Week Memorial Exhibition Room". This proposal originated from the fact that in 2007, before Mrs. Zeng, Ms. Zhang Yifan went to the United States to reunite with her daughter, she handed over some of her treasures to the exhibition room, and the original certificate may be included in it. In those years, I personally received this batch of items with Secretary Zhou and made a list. However, the original may also be taken away by Mrs. Zeng or lost in the follow-up arrangement.</p><p class="ql-block">Zhu Jichun immediately pointed out the urgency of the inquiry: the Chinese Academy of Sciences required to draw a conclusion before the commemorative conference on June 18. He proposed that if the relatives could not provide it, could he directly check the original file with the University of Michigan?</p><p class="ql-block">The situation of Zeng's relatives is: the eldest son Zeng Yunpeng died in Canada; the eldest daughter Jin Zeng Zhenli died in Taiwan; the second son Zeng Yunji and the adopted queen Shao Lin died in the United States.</p><p class="ql-block">After communication and analysis, the most feasible plan is to entrust Dr. Zeng Yunji (the second son of Zeng, former senior researcher of the U.S. Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, physical oceanographer, alumni of the University of Michigan) and Dr. Zeng Lanping (Zeng Yunji's cousin, retired professor at the University of California, San Diego) to represent their relatives to the University of Michigan officially Launch an application for file inquiry.</p><p class="ql-block">In order to ensure high efficiency, we have formulated a "two-pronged" plan:</p><p class="ql-block">1. Zeng Yunji and Zeng Lanping officially inquired about the secret university as relatives.</p><p class="ql-block">2. As required by the school, the Ocean Institute will issue a formal "Power of Attorney for Inquiry" to support it as soon as possible.</p> <p class="ql-block">曾云驥任職于美國海洋與大氣局時的名片。</p><p class="ql-block">Zeng Yunji's business card when he was in the U.S. Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.</p> <p class="ql-block"> 海洋所關(guān)于查詢工作的《委托函》。</p><p class="ql-block"> The "Letter of Attorney" about the inquiry work of the Ocean Institute.</p> <p class="ql-block">（二）隔洋攜手：跨越時空的接力</p><p class="ql-block"> 此前，接所辦公室遲杰主任通知，我已開始重建與曾云驥博士的聯(lián)系（遲曰：原計劃通過曾老弟子，重點實驗室的主任王廣策教授與胡敦欣院士幫助聯(lián)系，因胡院士健康原因而中斷）。鑒于此，我又通過電話、郵箱、微信等建立了溝通渠道，為后續(xù)隔洋協(xié)作奠定了基礎(chǔ)。</p><p class="ql-block"> 6月10日下午返青后，我第一時間將朱繼春發(fā)來的查詢請求及說明轉(zhuǎn)發(fā)給曾云驥。</p><p class="ql-block"> 第二天，曾云驥反饋了曾老在《曾呈奎文選》中的自述：1940年赴密大，在威廉·蘭道夫·泰勒（W. R. Taylor）教授指導(dǎo)下研究，1942年春季通過答辯，獲理學博士學位（Doctor of Science, D.Sc.）。他詢問此書自述是否可作為憑證？我回復(fù)道：海洋所亦有此資料，確為佐證。但本次查詢的關(guān)鍵，是需取得密歇根大學官方檔案出具的原始學位證明文件。</p><p class="ql-block"> 6月12日，曾云驥告知，已與曾藍萍聯(lián)名向密大提出申請，并獲加州理工大學波莫納分校王作躍（Zuoyue Wang）教授鼎力相助。同時，曾云驥還提供了由其繼母張宜范女士生前珍藏的曾呈奎博士學位證書原件影印本。當晚，曾云驥夫婦即將該影印本發(fā)給曾藍萍教授，由藍萍將其作為附件放入正式查詢郵件，向密歇根大學提交。</p><p class="ql-block"> 6月13日，查詢?nèi)〉脹Q定性突破！初步發(fā)現(xiàn)，曾老博士論文當年曾被美國國務(wù)院調(diào)取——因其包含了詳盡的香港海域圖及海藻分布資料，涉及敏感地理信息，被認定為具有二戰(zhàn)軍事機密價值，后被轉(zhuǎn)存于美國國防部。論文首頁已被成功查尋。密歇根大學已據(jù)此正式確認了曾老的博士學位資格、論文題目及導(dǎo)師信息。</p><p class="ql-block"> 6月16日，喜訊再傳：曾云驥發(fā)來了由密歇根大學出具的曾呈奎博士學位官方電子認證書（eDiploma）。曾藍萍已申請紙質(zhì)版文件，并將原件特快寄到海洋所存檔。部分找回的論文頁面亦在傳送中。</p> <p class="ql-block">(II) Hand in hand across the ocean: a relay across time and space</p><p class="ql-block">Previously, Chi Jie, the director of the receiving office, informed that I had begun to rebuild the contact with Dr. Zeng Yunji (Chi said: The original plan was to contact with Academician Hu Dunxin through Professor Wang Guangce, the director of the key laboratory, through Zeng's disciple, but it was interrupted due to Academician Hu's health reasons). In view of this, I have also established communication channels by telephone, email, WeChat, etc., which has laid the foundation for subsequent overseas collaboration.</p><p class="ql-block">After returning to Qing on the afternoon of June 10, I forwarded the inquiry request and explanation sent by Zhu Jichun to Zeng Yunji as soon as possible.</p><p class="ql-block">The next day, Zeng Yunji gave feedback to Zeng Lao's self-narration in Zeng Chengkui's Selected Writings: In 1940, he went to the University of Michigan and was in William Randolph Taylor (W. R. Taylor) studied under the guidance of Professor, and was defended in the spring of 1942 and obtained a Doctor of Science (Doctor of Science, D.Sc.). He asked if the self-narration of this book could be used as a certificate? I replied: The Ocean Institute also has this information, which is indeed the proof. However, the key to this inquiry is to obtain the original degree certificate issued by the official file of the University of Michigan.</p><p class="ql-block">On June 12, Zeng Yunji informed that he had jointly applied to the University of Michigan with Zeng Lanping, and was fully assisted by Professor Zuoyue Wang of the University of California Institute of Technology. At the same time, Zeng Yunji also provided a photocopy of the original Zeng Chengkui's doctoral degree certificate treasured by his stepmother, Ms. Zhang Yifan. That night, Zeng Yunji and his wife sent the photocopy to Professor Zeng Lanping, and Lanping put it as an attachment in the official inquiry email and submitted it to the University of Michigan.</p><p class="ql-block">On June 13, the inquiry made a decisive breakthrough! It was preliminarily found that Dr. Zeng's thesis was retrieved by the U.S. State Department at that time - because it contained detailed maps of Hong Kong's sea areas and seaweed distribution data, involving sensitive geographical information, it was identified as having the military confidential value of World War II, and was later transferred to the U.S. Department of Defense. The home page of the thesis has been successfully searched. The University of Michigan has officially confirmed Zeng Lao's doctoral qualification, thesis title and tutor information.</p><p class="ql-block">On June 16, the good news spread again: Zeng Yunji sent the official electronic certificate (eDiploma) of Zeng Chengkui's doctoral degree issued by the University of Michigan. Zeng Lanping has applied for the paper version of the document and sent the original to the Ocean for archiving. Some of the retrieved thesis pages are also being transmitted.</p> <p class="ql-block">（三）真相昭然：塵封的論文與時代的烙印</p><p class="ql-block"> 本次查詢最為關(guān)鍵的結(jié)論在于揭示了一段塵封的歷史：曾呈奎的博士論文內(nèi)容（詳盡的香港海藻資源分類與海岸線地理信息）在1942年學位授予時，即被美國國務(wù)院評估為具有戰(zhàn)時情報價值而被立即調(diào)取，并被列為機密文件歸檔于美國國防部。查詢獲得的官方翻譯文件清晰載明：“……論文被當時的美國國務(wù)院調(diào)取?！蛘撐挠虚v香港海藻，且內(nèi)部有香港地區(qū)海岸……等資料，為當時戰(zhàn)爭需要……”。這正是曾老博士學位記錄在公開檔案中一度不完整甚至缺失而引發(fā)后世猜疑的根本原因。且極易被別有用心之人無端猜疑惑眾。</p> <p class="ql-block">(III) The truth is obvious: the dusty thesis and the brand of the times</p><p class="ql-block">The most critical conclusion of this inquiry is to reveal a dusty history: Zeng Chengkui's doctoral thesis (detailed classification of Hong Kong seaweed resources and coastline geographical information) was immediately retrieved by the U.S. State Department as having wartime intelligence value when his degree was awarded in 1942, and was listed as a confidential document. Filed in the U.S. Department of Defense. The official translation document obtained from the inquiry clearly states: "...The paper was retrieved by the U.S. State Department at that time. ...Because the paper is about seaweed in Hong Kong, and there are materials such as the coast of Hong Kong inside, it is necessary for the war at that time...". This is the fundamental reason why Zeng Lao's doctorate record was once incomplete or even missing in the public archive, which aroused suspicion in future generations. And it is very easy for people with ulterior motives to guess for no reason.</p> <p class="ql-block"> ?。ㄋ模┦泛ｃ^沉：塵埃落定</p><p class="ql-block"> 在中國科學院海洋研究所和密歇根大學相關(guān)部門的運作支持下，經(jīng)海內(nèi)外、兩岸三地查詢相關(guān)人員的通力協(xié)作，這一場歷時一周、爭分奪秒的歷史真相還原工作，終告圓滿結(jié)束。</p><p class="ql-block"> 數(shù)日后，海洋所紀委副書記朱繼春同志如期收到了曾藍萍教授自美國寄達的密歇根大學官方文件：包括《曾呈奎博士學位證書》副本及密歇根大學《關(guān)于曾呈奎博士學位的官方認證書》等關(guān)鍵歷史憑證。這些凝聚著歷史真相的文件，已被鄭重列入中國科學院及海洋研究所永久檔案珍藏。</p><p class="ql-block"> 所黨委副書記兼紀委書記畢偉同志對查詢工作的高效、圓滿深感滿意，特發(fā)信予以祝賀、鼓勵，并囑我向遠在大洋彼岸的友人轉(zhuǎn)達研究所的深切謝意！</p><p class="ql-block"> 6月18日至19日，“曾呈奎先生誕辰110周年紀念大會暨學術(shù)會議”在中國科學院海洋研究所學術(shù)廳隆重舉行。中國科學院沈陽分院韓恩厚院長，青島市政協(xié)卞建平副主席，中國工程院院士侯保榮，歐亞科學院院士李乃勝，來自自然資源部第一、第二、第三海洋研究所，中國科學院水生所、南海海洋所、煙臺海岸帶所，水科院黃海水產(chǎn)研究所，山東海洋生物研究院，中國海洋大學、浙江海洋大學、山東大學、廈門大學、寧波大學、魯東大學、山西大學、天津師范大學、明月海藻集團、怡昌化工等單位的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)和專家參加紀念活動。大會莊重宣告了這段被還原的歷史真相，告慰了曾老的在天之靈。</p><p class="ql-block"> 在加拿大的曾老長子，時年87歲的曾云鵬先生攜夫人與兒子，在美國的曾老次子曾云驥的長子曾克禮，以及在臺灣的親屬一行，專程從海外飛抵青島出席盛會。曾云鵬在全體與會者的敬意中，代表已故的家父，親手接過了“感動山東人物”的榮譽證書。</p> <p class="ql-block">(IV) Shi Hai's hook sinks: the dust settles</p><p class="ql-block">With the operation support of the Institute of Oceanography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the relevant departments of the University of Michigan, and through the cooperation of relevant personnel at home and abroad and on both sides of the Straits, this week-long historical truth restoration work has finally been successfully completed.</p><p class="ql-block">A few days later, Comrade Zhu Jichun, Deputy Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission of the Ocean Institute, received the official documents of the University of Michigan sent by Professor Zeng Lanping from the United States as scheduled: including a copy of Zeng Chengkui's Doctoral Certificate and the Official Certificate of Zeng Chengkui's Doctoral Certificate of the University of Michigan and other key historical documents. These documents that condense the historical truth have been solemnly included in the permanent archives of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Oceanography.</p><p class="ql-block">Comrade Bi Wei, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Secretary of the Commission for Discipline Inspection, is deeply satisfied with the efficiency and success of the inquiry work. He sent a special letter to congratulate and encourage me, and asked me to convery my deep gratitude to my friends on the other side of the ocean!</p><p class="ql-block">From June 18th to 19th, the "110th Anniversary Conference and Academic Conference of Mr. Zeng Chengkui's Birth" was grandly held in the Academic Hall of the Institute of Oceanography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Han Enhou, President of the Shenyang Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Bian Jianping, Vice Chairman of the Qingdao Municipal Political Consultative Conference, Hou Baorong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Li Naisheng, Academician of the Eurasian Academy of Sciences, from the First, Second and Third Oceanographic Research Institute of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Institute of Aquatics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Nanhai Ocean Institute, the Yantai Coastal Belt Institute, and the Yellow Sea Salt Production Research Institute of the Academy of Water Sciences Leaders and experts from the Institute, Shandong Marine Research Institute, Ocean University of China, Zhejiang Ocean University, Shandong University, Xiamen University, Ningbo University, Ludong University, Shanxi University, Tianjin Normal University, Mingyue Seaweed Group, Yichang Chemical and other units participated in the commemorative activities. The conference solemnly announced the historical truth of this restored period and comforted the spirit of Zeng Lao in heaven.</p><p class="ql-block">Mr. Zeng Yunpeng, the eldest son of Zeng Lao in Canada, who was 87 years old at that time, took his wife and son, Zeng Keli, the eldest son of Zeng Yunji, the second son of Zeng Lao in the United States, and his relatives in Taiwan, flew to Qingdao from overseas to attend the event.
